Description
Watercolor Gouache. On a grocery bag, paint darks, then use white watercolor to build up lights. This is very different from how watercolor usually works, so the skin tones were very confusing, but eventually it worked out. From a photo. Possibly a study for a much larger work of the same.

I've never tried gauache..it sounds complicated though.
This is a very beautiful portrait. And clearly very accurate. I love the highlights on his face and in his hair.....the soft curves through his lips... The longer I look at it, the more I like it. Everything fits together... the five varying strips of color giving your space a simple fullness.
